ABOUT NORTH COUNTRY

North Country isn’t your typical bluegrass band, and they never aimed to be. Blending the raw soul of country songwriting with the rhythmic punch of traditional bluegrass, the band has carved out a sound that feels both rooted and refreshing. Formed in 2012 in the Pacific Northwest, the original lineup featured Will McSeveney, Norm Olsen, Kent Powell, Nick Dumas, and Stephen Burwell, each a standout player in their own right. They quickly earned a reputation for hard-driving, high-energy performances and razor-sharp musicianship.

Even in its early days, North Country wasn't interested in mimicry. Their focus was always on good songs first—songs that mean something, songs that stick. After lineup changes that saw Burwell join Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and Dumas go on to Special Consensus, the band reshaped itself in 2017 with the addition of then-rising mandolinist and vocalist Zach Top. It was a turning point. The band’s sound matured into a seamless hybrid of heartfelt country and driving bluegrass, grounded in songwriting that tugged at the heartstrings.

Their 2018 release Lonely Tonight was a breakout moment. Packed with modern classics like “Rain in Durango,” “Afraid to Say Goodbye,” and “Riding on a Railroad,” the album resonated with fans and peers alike for its emotional weight, sharp arrangements, and inventive approach to covering under-the-radar country songs with a fresh, bluegrass flair. It stood out in a genre that too often rewards replication over innovation.

Since then, the band has continued to evolve. With Zach Top now blazing his own trail as one of country music’s brightest new stars, North Country welcomed powerhouse vocalist and mandolinist Abby Gordon, whose style evokes shades of Alison Krauss and Lee Ann Womack while remaining wholly her own, and Connor Hutteball, one of the most dynamic bass players in the Northwest known for his rock-solid drive and tasteful sensibility.

Despite the changes, the mission remains: deliver great songs with heart, clarity, and grit. Whether it’s a soul-crushing original ballad or a reimagined country deep cut, North Country is driven by emotion, not ego, and focused on connection, not convention. Their music is for the fans who want substance over showboating and storytelling over speed-picking.

North Country is not just part of the bluegrass conversation. They are back and rewriting it.
